Inside The Echoes
Written over 6 weeks through March and April, one of the longest times I’ve taken to write an EP as I’d record an idea and constantly revisit it.
I’d been writing for several other projects and had to revisit some previous lyrical themes for them, one of which included the idea of the time between a heartbeat.
This started a train of thought into the names of spaces between things and I ended up down an online rabbit hole trying to figure out what the name was for the time between an echo……there isn’t one to my knowledge.
There is a considerable amount of delay and reverb on these tracks so I thought it apt to combine the previous idea into the title.

1 - Missing, Not Lost
“Not all who wander are lost” is a favourite quote of mine from J.R.R. Tolkien and I wanted to write something in reflection.
The idea that something or someone can be missing from your life doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve lost it/them.
The finger picking part came first and the 10 bar structure fell into place. I didn’t want to edit the train of thought so kept it and allowed it to develop from there.

2 - Eve Of Something
Ever felt like you’re standing on the edge of something?
Good or bad? You know something is about to happen.
I’d been on a roll, writing for a few people when I came up with this and that feeling of standing on the edge cropped up in some lyrical ideas and I wanted to try and write an instrumental piece that would capture it, focusing the textures and harmonies resolving.

3 - Cascade
My very good friend James (jamesbudden.co.uk) has always been an inspiration to me.
Not only a phenomenally talented artist, he’s a fantastic musician as well. One of the things he’s always encouraged me to do is look at ascending/descending chromatic lines within melody (and bass lines).
Combining that with an idea about keeping a note within the chord shape and creating harmony by moving the chord around it, I developed this.
The sounds reminded me of the sound of water flowing, especially like a stream full of rocks which is where the title came from.

4 - Missing Pieces
This originally developed from an exercise idea I’d been working on developing inversions in an attempt to broaden some chordal harmony.
I was watching the practice session back and heard something extra within it, put it into the looper and started putting the bass and additional layers to it.
Before too long, it started to develop into this.
It took a while to finalise though.
The title is a reflection of those missed opportunities when something has been removed outside of your control. Just as you feel you’re making progress, the rug can be pulled and you feel like you were about to put the final pieces together and you realise you’re missing one.

5 - Fear Of Falling
Written at the same time as “Eve Of Something” and inspired by similar lyrical themes.
With several songs for different project on the go, the theme of falling over that edge came into play.
Sometimes you’ve got to jump, regardless of what that might entail.
I had been playing around with some new delays and reverbs and once I’d piled them up, created the sound I wanted to in order to try and capture that sense of falling but with a sense of peace rather than panic.
