about

Aurora
Coming together after a period away from solo bass.
It’s been good to play more “Traditional” bass parts but once rehearsals started happening and the world slowly began to venture outside, inspiration tugged me back into a practice routine that moved back into soloing and developing textures and sounds.
Written and developed predominantly throughout James Budden’s livestreams on Facebook (check out his Facebook Page….and Instagram…..and YouTube….and his website jamesbudden.co.uk ) so additional inspiration coming from watching him work.
The cover art is an old family photo and I liked the way the light is shining through the window, creating an aurora-like image on the face.

1 - Invisible Gaze
Ever had the feeling you’re being watched?
I’ve been fascinated by the sensation of subconsciously knowing if/when someone is watching you.
I was reading into some studies on it and came across the phrase “Invisible Gaze Effects” and loved the descriptiveness.
The riff developed over an evening and I enjoyed the slight unease of the timing and felt it captured that similar feeling.

2 - Programmed Pulse
This came from a late night practice trying to replicate some sounds that sounded computerised. I’d been watching a video on autonomous robots that mended a heart valve and felt like there was a title in there.
Personally, I feel the chords that come in around the minute mark, being pushed ahead of the pulse and played with lot’s of compression to make it sound more like a keyboard create an almost signal to the pulse.
It felt like that was the connecting part to the inspiration and the title.

3 - Fawns
One of the first attempts back at writing for solo bass after my break and possibly the most uplifting song in this collection.
The riff developed from a separate lead line I was putting on something else (which ended up being re-written because I used it here instead).
The title came from playing it to my own man-cubs.
They decided it sounded like dancing on the edge of a wood.

4 - Phantasm
I’d had the idea for this riff all day…..as I started to work on it though, it changed from the original idea of quite an aggressive and discordant idea into something more diatonic.
Once I had the initial ideas down, I started to focus more on sounds and layering up various effects and modules to try and create and fill space in different ways.
The space that moves within this, for me, stirs the imagination and pictures of a fantasy land.

5 - La Douleur Exquise
A beautifully descriptive phrase.
I wanted to write something that had that high pitched, drone in it having utilised a similar technique during some film-scoring.
Once I’d created some patches and the initial intro, changing the key to the relative minor captured more of the feeling I was going for.
Reverting back to the major key in the middle was an attempt to show a sense of hope before reverting back.
