about

Psithurism
A word that describes the sounds of trees.
Of wind rustling through branches and the rustling of leaves.
I’ve spent a lot of this year walking through local woodland and reserves and often plugged straight in when I’ve come back. It’s been great to be able to sit and work on so many ideas with my man cubs being the ultimate judges.
Written throughout 2020 lockdown and developed through September.

1 - Dusk
Written after having sat on top of Street Hill one evening.
The last line of the melody came first and it took a while to build in the backing as I was trying to capture the mood of watching day turn to evening.

2 - Bounce
Another where the lead came first.
After attempts to create a more ambient backing, I was playing it to my children and they started dancing so switched it to something with more bounce.
I particularly like the 2nd melody in this as it moves away from the theme.

3 - Rise
I’d been playing with this idea for a few days following another Monday evening watching James Budden’s live stream.
Building the various layers took a lot of time to create but I really wanted to focus on having the interest be there with a simple melody.

4 - Qualm
I’ve had the melody idea for a while and tried to put it to some other tunes but it’s never quite fit.
Setting up a slower-paced backing track and adding the the syncopated bass line allowed me to finally use this melody.

5 - Elevate
I’d been playing around with tying off over the 12th fret and playing behind it to create these odd harmonics lines.
It’s enabled some really fun ideas to come through.
We’d been for a day out on the North Somerset coast and I’d started building the initial ideas on the way back and once I had added the harmonics line, it all started to come together.

6 - Trigger Tick
I wanted to try and capture a sense of unease with this.
The lead line came quite quickly but ti took some time to settle of the sounds to put behind it.
I liked the way some of the sounds, particularly the Bit Crush glitched a little at the end of the loops.
Another thing that adds to the uncomfortable in this.
