about

As the year is drawing to a close, I find myself playing with more people again. Each of them sparking an interest somewhere.
This is driving me to create new sounds and textures outside of "Standard" bass playing.
There's a definite move away from the loop pedal here with most of these songs written for other projects that didn't come to fruition, but my commitment to them is unwavering.
This is dedicated to YOU, whoever you might be.

Track Listing
1 - Higher State
The drummer was tuning his snare...the guitarists were discussing gear...I had my loop pedal and half an idea for something that sounded underwater.
The initial harmonised chords came first with the bass and then the echo-drenched tapped harmonics in the lead line.
I'd come up with the idea before they'd finished.
"Be careful, that'll start a new EP process" they joked..........

2 - Cicatrice
Another word for a scar......and there's plenty of them on my body!
The song came together how it's built here, with the tapping parts coming first, wanting to build towards a wall of sound.
It took a lot of EQing to get them all to cut through and definitely keeps me on my toes when I play it live.

3 - Why Not
This started out as a poppier version for a full band but never went anywhere. I didn't want to lose it so redid all the parts on bass and really enjoyed the chordal movements.
Another move away from the Loop Pedal but too much fun to ignore.
And this is the standard answer to "Why?"

4 - Perfect
Another departure from the loop pedal and this took some time to arrange.
I really wanted the melody to emulate a vocal line.
When this finally came through, I felt it captured the mood perfectly.
Again, the chordal part came first and I really like the movement and melody within.
Sometimes, a little work and perseverance can make things perfect (or at least close).

5 - Keep Quiet
The simple top line was stuck in my head for a day.
When I finally got pluggåed in and got my bass in my hands, this just poured out.
I felt like there was a quiet intensity to it and that really drew me into exploring what I could do with minimal tracks.
There is a lot to be said for not being able to say/do the things you want to. I think if I hadn't had to wait to get to this, it would have had a very different feel.

6 - Flesh and Bones
I had all the chordal parts to this but could not find the melody.
I took it to one of my closest friends and we sat and played it, eliminating ideas.
He made me try to describe the "Picture" I was trying to create and how I wanted the sounds to convey that.
I love the middle section where the chords extend over the pedal riff.
