about

Events at the end of January created a momentary pause and allowed some time to reflect and create accordingly.
Continuing to utilise a loop pedal as part of practice and performance, moments and ideas appear constantly, pushing me to further develop time and sound as part of this ongoing venture.

1 - Unconditional
I'd been playing around with false harmonics and had the part you hear on this in the loop pedal for a couple of days whilst I worked on creating the rest.
As I developed the chord sequence, I was really drawn to the way the top of the chord moves, creating its own sort of counter melody.
On top of that, I liked the way the timings clashed, hence why the harmonics come in at a later point.
The title came from a conversation about how often we offer a piece of ourselves unconditionally or more so, how often people accept us unconditionally.

2 - Plugged In
The last track I wrote for this EP and took the longest time.
Once I had the riff down, nailing everything else took an age.
It was too fun to play over, and I couldn't find the discipline to bring myself to write down the melody for almost a week, constantly having to leave it to work on something else in order to free up headspace to build this properly.
After an evening where I'd recorded the loop directly into Logic, I spent the rest of the time plugged in recording as I went, picking out the best ideas until I had something close to this.
Another evening honing it down until it finally became what you can hear here.

3 - So Near, So Far
I came up with this riff as I was working on something that could be played without the need for a loop pedal.
I felt like this section was catchy and once I'd changed my mind and loaded into the RC-30, focused on developing the layers and sounds.
The title came from reflecting on all the close calls I've witnessed recently with friends and acquaintances being one decision away from something entirely different.

4 - 14 Weeks
Written during one of my dear friend, James Budden's live streams (www.facebook.com/JamesBuddenArt).
I find his Monday night live sessions a huge source of inspiration playing along as he paints and mumbles.
The chordal part came first. Once it was loaded into the loop pedal, the other sounds came quite naturally. I kept this intentionally minimal in terms of layers and effects wanting to focus on squeezing the most out of the bass and my hands.

5 - Dream Walker
I rarely dream. When I do, it's particularly vivid.
After a conversation about how often people dream, I ended up down a Wikipedia hole on dream theories and came across the theory of Oneironautics, being able to travel within a dream and found it utterly fascinating.
The melody was the first part that came to me (not in a dream though).
Once I'd put the chords behind it, the main riff started to creep in.
I essentially wrote this in the "Wrong" order.
Deconstructing the pieces and ordering them into a way I could effectively work with them took a while though.

6 - See What I See
I'd been playing around with the intro riff, taking the sparseness of it and using it to play "Out" of the chords.
Once I'd added a couple of layers to it though, particularly as counter melodies, it started to become something more.
Once everything was drenched in reverb and delay, it started taking shape into this.
