I’m a firm believer that growth is important and in order to grow, reflection is important.
This collection of songs started to develop during a bit of a restless time, at the end of 2023.
I’d been focusing most of my time and energy away from music for a few months and looking back, it wasn’t helping my restlessness.
My only musical exercise had been sporadically mixing a new Skinflower record but ultimately, I needed to pick up my bass again and create something.
It’s been a while since I’ve had the time, space and even desire to create with this project but after updating the HX Stomp and the spark of inspiration that comes from a few new sounds (and tweaking some old ones) ….these songs just started to flow.
Between a list of song requests Emma gave me to learn and these new sounds, a new desire to create started grow.
Consider it a lesson learned. When in doubt, listen to the one who cares the most and don’t ignore the desire to create.
Circles
As I was creating this, I felt it had almost a “Shanty” vibe to it. The images it conjured to me felt like looking out of a porthole.
I’ve always had a thing about being near the sea, and it doesn’t make much for my head to conjure up these images and then go with them.
One of the things about working within the restrictions of a loop pedal is that everything circles back around.
Between that and the imagery I was getting, I knew I had the title.
That sub-bass sold it for me.
What started off as just playing with some sounds then jumped into a “I need to record this” moment when I hit THAT button.
Keep A Look Out
This happened to develop the same evening as “Circles”.
I liked the “Throb” in the bass on this, almost felt like the sound was closer to bowing than bass.
When I was writing the lead part, I got a bit lost in the form and ended up writing it with the “Wrong” starting point…. but I liked it. I like that it kind of throws you off when you’re listening as well.
The imagery was something quite similar to that of “Circles” as well but felt like I was looking out over something…I think I need to go to the seaside!!!!
There’s a lot of playing with compressors here. Something I’ve not really done much of in the past.
It's been good to humble myself with how little I know and play around to try and get some of these atmospherics.
If You Only Knew
THIS is what started everything. I’d not dragged out my HX Stomp for a while and the last patch I had used on there was “Montana” from Ian Allison’s signature collection.
The sound lends itself to this style of playing…..in both Ian’s and my opinions.
I was sat in the kitchen and these chords just started. It struck something in me.
It made me feel sad, to the point that I cried a little as I was playing. I knew I had to work with this idea.
I created some custom patches in Logic to mimic the HX Stomp and just hit record.
Not strictly loop-based, but I wanted to add some more bass to the back section to let it develop.
Maybe a duet piece for the future?.....or I need the foot pedals from an organ?.....big birthday in 2025, just saying.
Solitude
This came together one evening whilst everyone was out. I was diving in hard to the fx to create the layers I was hearing. I wanted something that felt more “Space”-like and less “Sea”-like but kept that sense of voyage….if that makes sense. There are a few familiar sounds here I fell back on but there’s a “Feedback” in the layers that is very new and A LOT of fun to play with…even if it is a bit unwieldy.
I was unsure about using it or even trying to tame it, but I like the way it subtly builds throughout the track until it become noticeable and then makes a feature of itself.
Dan's debut EP, which I got to play a few tracks on.
He has since released a full length album but this one really captures the fun we used to have when we played together years ago. Matthew White
