Sonder

I came across this word and though it was simply awesome.
The realisation that everyone, even strangers on the street, has a life as complex as one’s own, which they are constantly living despite anyone’s awareness of it.
We interact with so many people, passers-by and maybe even we are just a feature in someone’s life, a blurry background they drive past….we are all just trying to get by in our own ways.
I’d been going through a challenging start to the year and hadn’t picked up my bass in a while.
Finally finding some time and space and these quickly started taking shape.
It never ceases to amaze me how a little time away from the instrument (no matter how much I dislike it) can elevate the experience…..maybe I’m just a passer-by in the story of my bass??


Exulansis

I came across this word as I was putting the final touches to this track.
It relates to giving up trying to talk about an experience because people are unable to relate to it, which allows it to drift away from the rest of your life story, until the memory itself feels out of place, wandering restlessly, not even looking for a place to land.
This was the first track I developed and once the initial chords were in (I love that top note pedal), I knew it was going to come together without too much fight.
I tried adding various harmonies to the lead line, but nothing quite worked so I dug into the bag of tricks and came up with a simple 3 octave patch, mixing the “Space Bass” with regular and an additional octave.


Anecdoche

I had already completed this but returned after I came across the title.
It means a conversation where everyone is talking and no one is listening, simply talking over each and repeating each other’s words as their own until there is nothing left to say.
I redid the lead line, layering in a lapse in the delay after I found this and restructured it a little to try and pull that theme into the music….I think I captured it.
I wanted to keep this deliberately simple and let the sway of the rhythm carry it.


Minerva

I heard someone describe a wise woman as “Minerva” and I thought it was quite poetic.
As the Roman Goddess of Arts and Wisdom, it’s easy to see why poets have used her as a metaphor in this way.
It got me thinking though about how people we see as wise or with more life-experience actually acquired that, and it’s often though some hard life lessons, especially if they're women.
It’s the price we pay for knowing better, but I ask, is it always worth it?
I wanted to create a longer form loop and really explore something that reflected a sense of wonder, adoration and keep a hint of sadness, for want of a better word.
Developing the 3-part harmony was really fun on this one.


Jouska

Again, I stumbled on this word, and I knew it was perfect for this.
A hypothetical conversation you convulsively play out in your head, which serves as a kind of practice ground or safe space for that great remark you never made or the cutting comeback you held onto.
This one really frustrated me to record….mainly because it took a while to work out what the actual timings were (to save you the trouble, it’s 3x 7/8 then 9/8).
Once I’d managed to get the click set up and could start programming the effects, so it wasn’t so messy, it started to fall into place without so much struggle.
Again, creating a 3-part harmony on this was great fun although this time, going back to the Space Bass.
