about

Sometimes, all it takes is one moment of inspiration and all of a sudden, multiple ideas start forming. These tunes came off the back of a request from Emma, for me to write her a song to use when she went on a weekend away.
Having spent so much time recently, working on the latest Skinflower release, as well as a few dep gigs, it came as no surprise that these pieces came together in the way they did. It’s been a real rollercoaster couple of months with a lot of turbulence and it was nice to sit and find a moment of calm during this creation process.
Written and recorded through the end of May 2023.

Wayfinder
The runic compass, Vegvisir has been really important in my life over the last few years.
It keeps appearing. So much so that I’ve been debating getting it tattooed.
Emma bought me a compass for my birthday last year that has this symbol on the case. I take this compass with me everywhere, just in case I ever feel lost….let alone get lost.
I developed the chords for this during an evening sat whilst Emma was working although it took quite a while to create the sounds I was happy with.
The melody came together almost instantly though and I left it unchanged from those first ideas.

Hands of Flowers
I love buying flowers for my partner. I try to do it regularly.
The kitchen always looks a little brighter to me when there’s flowers in it too.
It’s a privilege to be in the position to do it.
The title came some time after the music when I was trying to name feelings or sentiments I was feeling listening back to it.
This is a dedication to the way Emma looks at me each time I bring flowers into the house.
The chords came together through some absent-minded noodling and once I had half an idea in the looper, the layers and melody all came together and it started to grow into this.
Sometimes, keeping it simple just works.

A Look Like No Other
I wrote this after I’d been reminiscing about the first time Emma and I met.
That first look was like no other I’d ever felt or given.
I’m just a bit of a soppy berk really.
It’s a bit of a finger stretch to pick out the chords so when I was writing it, I had to find a way of tapping it without getting THAT attack. Cue some reverse delay and compression and the soundscape started to build.
I wanted to avoid getting too “Effectsy” on this one and also, wanted to keep it quite honest and make that lead line almost “Voice-like”

Still Here
Sometimes, life throws a lot at you and it takes some serious commitment to see it through.
This is somewhat of an ode to myself. Regardless of all the challenges that have been faced and those that are being faced into, I’m still here.
It’s a reminder to look out for and look after the ones who stand by us, when other people would’ve left.
Look after yourselves out there and look after your tribe.
Once I had that lead line in the looper, everything else started to really gel.
More harmonies on harmonies (regular followers know how much fun I have with doing this) and the structure built on it’s own.

Blank Mask
I’d been playing around with this lead line for a while, trying to develop it into something.
It took a while to adjust it and it wasn’t until I stumbled on the sounds that I really started to find myself with something I was willing to work with.
Rather than a melody I, wanted to focus on those swells so as not to take away from the initial lead line.
The title comes from seeing some masks in a craft shop. Seeing them totally blank made me think about the masks we all wear from time to time and how refreshing it is to drop them when we finally feel safe to do so.

Lost At Sea
On the weekend Emma was away, she created a piece of artwork.
I was so struck by it, along with the story behind it, that as this song started to form, I knew exactly what it was going to be called and how it was going to end up.
This ended up being a little more dense that I initially imagined but I was having too much fun with the effects!! It was such a joy to create with all these textures….and then the return of the “Space Bass” to cut over the top of all the layers.
Effects should be able to inspire
